Improving our healthspan and reducing healthcare costs doesn't require rocket science—just focusing on three key factors: creating safe spaces for movement, encouraging outdoor time, and fostering social connections. Simple solutions, like brisk daily walks or spending just 15 minutes outdoors, can significantly reduce risks for diseases like heart disease and cancer. Moreover, promoting active transportation, such as cycling, has proven benefits, including lowering the risk of early death and improving happiness.

Studies also show the profound impact of social ties on health, with people having strong social connections enjoying better survival rates. Yet, social isolation remains a significant issue, particularly among younger generations, exacerbating mental health risks. As the built environment plays a pivotal role in fostering these healthy behaviors, cities and communities can implement solutions like better sidewalks, bike lanes, green spaces, and social hubs to dramatically improve health outcomes.

Cities like Redondo Beach have set inspiring examples with initiatives like “walking school buses” that reduce childhood obesity, while Paris aims to create a fully bikable city. Urban greening projects, like the Green Heart study in Louisville, show that adding trees can lower temperatures, reduce pollution, and improve health. Community-driven efforts, like those in London’s Barking and Dagenham, highlight the power of creating places that bring people together, fostering trust and belonging.

By prioritizing walkable streets, outdoor access, and social engagement, we can create healthier, more vibrant places—saving lives and billions in healthcare costs.
