Since Massachusetts introduced its specialized stretch code in 2023, 45 municipalities, representing 30% of the state's population, have adopted the new guidelines aimed at reducing carbon emissions in buildings. This voluntary code encourages energy-efficient and electrified construction, pushing the state closer to its 2050 carbon-neutral goals. Climate advocates are celebrating the rapid uptake, while the construction industry expresses concerns about higher costs and complexity. Despite challenges, the code is being embraced by major cities, with more towns planning to follow suit, promoting long-term energy savings and sustainability.
