Airbnb has become a ubiquitous part of the hospitality industry, but it may have found a new weapon to combat its biggest obstacle for continued growth. Buildings have huge impacts on our environment. A U.S. Energy Information Administration report reveals 47.6% of all energy produced in the U.S. — and 75% of all the electricity produced — is consumed by buildings. As a result of that energy consumption, buildings account for nearly half — 44.6% — of all CO2 emissions in the U.S. If the country is interested in reducing its impact on the environment, buildings will have to be a heavy focus, but there is a disconnect in the real estate industry. …

Commercial real estate tenants have reached a new measure of expectations and demands for office amenities. It’s difficult to pinpoint one specific time when this shift took place, but it’s become very clear that the office market has moved away from cutting costs to deliver the cheapest space possible. By: Rick Haughey, Vice President, Industry Technology Initiatives, NMHC There’s a question I ask when I hear folks in the apartment industry pondering the deployment of smart locks in apartment homes: “when was the last time you used a metal key to gain access to your hotel room?” If the hotel industry figured out electronic door locks decades ago, the apartment industry can surely figure out smart locks today. The advantages of deploying the locks in new apartment construction or retrofit…
THE REAL DEAL
Being a New York City rental broker has always been a tough gig. But the job is getting even harder. It’s now been exactly one year since StreetEasy began charging a daily $3 fee to post a rental listing on its site — a move that hit brokers in the pocketbook at a time when margins were already thin. The fee — which does not seem to have dissuaded brokers from using the Zillow-owned site — is just one of several stressors that New York City rental brokers are facing….

The big picture: Last month, I toured a model of the store on Alibaba’s Hangzhou campus. Steven Keyang Shi, who leads the Alibaba tech team creating the store, told me that the objective is …
