Amazon has launched the Amazon Key Access Control System, a new suite of customizable access technologies aimed at streamlining entry and security for multi-family properties and gated communities. Built on the existing Amazon Key infrastructure, this system modernizes the outdated intercom model with smart, app-connected features that offer secure, convenient, and cost-effective building access for residents, staff, visitors, and delivery drivers.

With growing demand for smartphone-based access and digital security solutions, Amazon’s offering introduces four professionally installed access systems designed to give both property managers and tenants more control over building entry—all integrated into the Ring app for remote management and real-time interaction.

The system includes:

  • Virtual Key: A basic upgrade that lets residents grant self-entry or visitor access through the Ring app—no video functionality.

  • Intercom Boost: A smart tag added to existing call boxes enabling one-way video and two-way audio communication via smartphone.

  • Intercom Lite: Similar to Boost but available standalone for properties without existing intercoms.

  • Intercom Plus: A sleek, touchscreen unit allowing directory browsing and code-based entry.

These tools offer features like virtual keys, automated access for verified delivery drivers, and an online portal for property managers to manage access credentials, reducing dependency on physical keys or keycards.

Charney Property Management, one of the pilot participants, praised the system’s impact on both tenant experience and building operations. EVP Gabriel Siegal cited simplified contractor access, improved delivery logistics, and a reduction in cluttered lobbies as tangible operational benefits. He emphasized the affordability and reliability of Amazon’s system as a modern replacement for aging, maintenance-heavy intercoms.

Amazon Key’s technology builds on its track record in the smart access space, having previously scaled from garage deliveries in Seattle to international deployment across single-family homes, multi-family buildings, and commercial properties. Today, Amazon Key unlocks doors over four times per second in 10 countries, underscoring its scale and reliability.

The Virtual Key and Intercom Lite models are available for order now, while Intercom Boost and Intercom Plus are set for release later this summer. Amazon will showcase the full system at its Apartmentalize booth in Las Vegas (June 11–13), inviting property owners and managers to experience the system firsthand.
