The energy demands of data centers are set to soar, with AI as a key driver. Currently, a ChatGPT query requires nearly 10 times the electricity of a Google search, and this rising energy consumption signifies a major shift in power usage globally. Goldman Sachs Research projects that by 2030, data center power demand will grow by 160%, increasing their global share of electricity use from 1-2% to 3-4%. This surge will notably impact the US and Europe, with data centers expected to contribute to a significant rise in electricity demand and associated carbon emissions. To meet this demand, substantial investments in renewable energy and infrastructure will be necessary, underscoring the critical role of sustainable practices in the tech industry's future.
